Ôn tâp Thành ngữ tiếng Anh hay và thông dụng (P.2) – Good and common English idioms

Thành ngữ tiếng Anh được sử dụng phổ biến trong cuộc sống hằng ngày

  • A ray of sunshine: someone or something that brings great joy.

Ai đó hoặc điều gì đó mang lại niềm vui lớn.

Example: science class is a ray of sunshine in my day, thanks to my teacher. She is so friendly and positive!

  • A wolf in sheep’s clothing: someone or something that seem to be good but is actually not good at all.

Một người có bộ dạng dễ mến và thân thiện để che dấu sự thật mình là kẻ xấu xa.

Example: Pete is a wolf in sheep’s cloting. He seems realyy nice, bit he’s actually a mean person who wants other people to fail

  • Apple of one’s eye:  a person or thing that is very special or loved the most.

Chỉ ai đó hoặc cái gì đó rất đặc biệt, được yêu thích nhất đối với một người.

Example: Lucas is the apple of his grandparents’ eyes. They love him more than anyone!

  • At the drop of a hat: without needing an excuse or reason.

Làm một việc gì đó đột ngột, không có kế hoạch từ trước và không có lý do rõ ràng.

Example: she doesn’t need an excuse to stay home from work. She’ll decide to stay home at the drop of a hat: if it’s raining, if it’s cold, anything!

  • Back to square one: back to where one started, back to the beginning.

Trở lại điểm xuất phát.

Example: my teacher didn’t like my essay and asked me to rewrite it. I’m back to square one!

  • Bent out of shape: to become very upset or angry.

Trở nên rất khó chịu hoặc tức giận.

Example: I told Joe that his joke wasn’t funny and he got all bent out of shape. He won’t even say hello!

  • Clear as mud: unclear or confusing.

Vấn đề gì đó rất khó hiểu.

Example: fred read the directions, but they didn’t help at all. They were clear as mud!

  • Down to the wire: until right before the deadline or final moment.

Hướng tới giới hạn cuối cùng, vừa đúng hạn.

Example: if I finish this project on time, it will be down to the wire! I will finish it at the last possible moment.

  • Fall through the cracks: to be forgotten oe overlooked, often within an organization.

Thường bị lãng quên hoặc bỏ qua.

Example: as a techer, I often see students who are falling through the cracks. I spend a lot of time tutoring them after school to help them succeed.

  • Fly off the handle:  to suddenly become very angry.

Nổi giận bất thình lình. 

Example: her boss used to fly off the handle for every tiny mistake that she made. I’m glad she found a new job!

  • Get a word in edgewise: to say a word or sentence when someone else is talking without stopping.

Xen vào cuộc trò chuyện của người khác, thường có một ý nghĩa tiêu cực.

Example: Laura was talking quickly for a long time with no pause. I couldn’t get a word in edgewise.

  • Hear through the grapevine: to learn about something through informal communication or gossip.

Tìm hiểu được một thứ gì đó qua một nguồn tin không chính thức (tin đồn).

Example: Susan heard through the grapevibe that her colleagues were planning her a birthday party.

  • Hit the hay: to go to bed with the intention of falling asleep quickly.

Đi ngủ một cách nhanh chóng.

Example: Lucas is exhausted! He’s going to het the hay.

  • In a nutshell : concisely; in a few words.

Dùng khi muốn tổng hợp tin tức hay thông tin.

Example: in the last few weeks, I graduated, got a job, and moved to a new city. In a nutshell, it has been a great month! 

  • In a pinch: if necessary; in an emergency.

Trong trường hợp cần thiết, nếu cần thiết. 

Example: I don’t have much time, bit if you’re in a pinch, I can help you write the report.

  • In a rut: in a boring routine.

Kẹt vào một lề thói tẻ nhạt, buồn chán, đi theo vết xe cũ.

Example: he feels like he’s in a rut because he does the same thing every day.

  • In the spotlight: receiving a lot of public attention.

Nhận được rất nhiều quan tâm từ dư luận.

Example: Christine loves being in the spotlight, especially at work. She enjoys having people pay attention to her and her work.

  • Jack of all trades: a person who has many skills or can do many different jobs.

Một người có nhiều kỹ năng hoặc có thể làm nhiều công việc khác nhau. 

Example: sam can build a computer, cook a delicious meal, fix a car and fly an airplane. He is a Jack of all trades.

  • Just peachy: wonderful or great.

Tuyệt vời.

Example: You got a scholarship? That’s just peachy!

  • Keep the ball rolling: to keep a process moving.

Đảm bảo cho việc gì đó được tiếp tục diễn ra theo quá trình của nó. 

Example: as you can see, our sales are increasing. Let’s keep the ball rolling and continue our success!

  • Keep you on your toes: to make someone be alert and prepared to deal with problems.

Tập trung vào công việc, không lơ là.

Example: talking care of my two young nieces for an entire weekend keeps me on my toes! They are very active.

  • Last – ditch effort: a desperate final attempt, especialyy to avoid disaster.

Nỗ lực để thành công sau nhiều lần thất bại.

Example: I was up all night studying. It was my last – ditch effort to pass the exam.

  • Lose one’s cool: to become angry and to stop being calm.

Giữ bình tĩnh khi bị áp lực.

Example: when Jessica realized her little brother had taken all the cookies, she lost her cool. She even yelled screamed.

  • Nip something in the bud: to stop something at an early stage before it becomes a larger problem.

Ngăn chặn một việc hay một ý nghĩ ngay từ đầu, trước khi nó trở thành một vấn đề nghiêm trọng. 

Exmple: I wanted to nip this cold in the bud, so I started talking medicine as soon as I noticed I was sick.

  • No rhyme or reason: to have no logic or explanation.

Không có lời giải thích rõ ràng, thích hợp.

Example: A. Why did you decide to live the mountains?

  1. There was no rhyme or reason. It just seemed like a good idea.
  • Off the cuff: done without planning or preparation.

Có nghĩa là nói hay phát biểu mà không chuẩn bị trước.

Example: My teacher asked me to give a presentation today. I didn’t have time to prepare, so I spoke off the cuff.

  • Out of one’s mind: behaving in a crazy or senof seless way.

Chỉ ai đó cư xử một cách hấp tấp, không suy nghĩ chín chắn. 

Example: he’s out of his ming if he thinks he can real all those books in one night!

  • Pain in the neck: an annoying or difficult person or thing.

Người gây phiền toái, khiến người khác khó chịu.

Example: my brother is a pain in the neck. He takes my toys and doesn’t give them back.

  • Sleep like a rock: to sleep very well without waking up from any noise.

Ngủ rất say.

Example: my sister sleeps like a rock! I can play coud music in the same room as her and she doesn’t wake up.

  • State of the art: modern and using the most recent ideas.

Tiên tiến, công nghệ hiện đại.

Example: the technolog company uses state of the art computers.

  • The bottom line: the most basic truth.

Điểm mấu chốt nhất.

Example: there are many ideas, but the bottom line is that we need to make a change.

  • The last straw: the final challenge in a series of challenges.

Làm cho tình hình càng tồi tệ thêm.

Example: my computer crashed again! This is the last straw! I need a new one!

  • Tip of the iceberg: a small part of something much larger.

Phần nổi của tảng băng chìm, bề nổi của vấn đề. 

Example: the snacks we had in the kitchen were just the tip of the iceberg. There was a whole dinner waiting for us in the dining room!

  • To be an open book: to share a lot of information about one’s life with others on a regular basis.

Một người hay một vật bộc lộ rõ ràng, dễ hiểu, không che đậy.

Example: my friand Jesse is an open book. He tells me everything about his life.

  • To have bigger fish to fry: to have something to do that is much more important than other things.

Có việc quan trọng cần làm hơn.

Example: I’m not going to the meeting today. I have bigger fish to fry. I got a job interview with Facebook!

  • To have something down to a fine art: to be very good at doing something after doing it many times.

Làm tốt việc gì đó sau khi đã có kinh nghiệm.

Example: she has baking down to a fine art. She markes the best cookies.

  • Wallflower : a person who feels shy, awkward, or excluded at a party.

Chỉ những người sống nội tâm, khép kín.

Example: don’t be a wallflower! Come sing the next karaoke song with us!
